Evan Zimmermann: The love and passion for watches

It doesn’t come as a surprise to many that the CEO and President of Antiquorum Auctioneers, Evan Zimmermann, is a watch aficionado. So passionate about watches, he gave up his job as a lawyer some years ago to become the Managing Director of Antiquorum, the world’s largest auction house that specializes in the field of horology. During his first few years in the company, Evan realized how much he loves collecting timepieces. “I used to represent the auction house as a lawyer,” says Evan. “But when I realized that I preferred to be around people talking watches at the Antiquorum offices than practicing law, I knew it was time to make the switch.”

Recognized for his tremendous love for watches, he was named by Forbes Magazine in 2008 as an “important collector” of vintage Rolex sport watches. Evan Zimmermann collects vintage Rolex sports models from the 1950s and 1960s, which were among the first watches created for specific recreational activities. Classic and simple in style, the Rolex was considered the first truly waterproof, air-tight sport watch back in 1927 after swimmer Mercedes Gleitzes wore it during a 15-hour swim across the English Channel.

Zimmermann’s role as the President and CEO of Antiquorum is to keep the business alive, profitable, and reputable. In fact, under his management, the company was able to sell Mahatma Gandhi’s pocket watch for $2.1 million, Steve McQueen’s Rolex Submariner for $234,000, and Albert Einstein’s Longines wristwatch for $596,000.
